Avoiding Overtraining

In our previous article we discussed Overtraining and its pitfalls. Today we’ll give you four golden tips on how to avoid it at all costs. Some of these may seem a tad obvious but keep in mind that when you’re frustrated and depressed, you tend to overlook even the most basic principles.

1) Get adequate restOvertraining is a condition brought on by overexerting so make sure your body gets adequate rest. If you’re strength training do not work out more than three times a week interspersed with cardio days in-between. Even then do not exceed the five day mark in a single week. Also make sure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day. I have seen hardworking guys hit a dreaded plateau simply because they weren’t getting enough sleep every night.

2) Innovate If you find yourself plateauing or thoroughly bored of your existing routine, it’s time to switch things up a bit by experimenting with different exercises or different variants of existing ones. In fact why don’t you try out some of the circuit training routines we’ve discussed earlier (link to circuit training at gym and home)? It could help you bust through that plateau.

3) Eat (and drink) rightEating right doesn’t only facilitate weight loss but imbibing a regular quantity of essential nutrients, vitamins, carbohydrates and proteins will make sure your body recovers faster after an intense workout. Also make sure you consume at least 3 liters of water a day as a well hydrated body performs optimally.

4) Take a breakIf all else fails, take a complete break. That’s right. You heard me. Stop going to the gym for 10-15 days and you will see the benefits. Just make sure you’re still eating right during this break period or you’ll have another problem on your hands.
