Training for a Marathon: Part One

The Mumbai Marathon is just a few months away. The registrations have already begun. Whether it is the 7 km dream run or all the way, running for a marathon requires preparation. Your body has to be ready so that it can keep going for a long time and not leave you feeling drained out after the run. Personal Fitness Trainer Somesh Kamra tells us how to gear up, even if it is the first time you are running a marathon.

Talk to other Runners: Be curious. Talk to others who have run marathons previously. They will tell you what running a marathon is all about and share tips. This will be useful especially if you are a beginner. Other than that, start by training yourself so that you can finish the marathon.

Set a Goal: Once you have made up your mind to run the marathon. Set yourself a goal. Do you want to run the complete distance (42 km), half marathon (21 km) or the dream run (7 km). You can then start training for your chosen marathon distance accordingly. You could either join a running/jogging club that promotes marathon running and training or get a personal trainer to help you. Most importantly, stay constant. Don’t haphazardly jump from one type of training to another.

Build up Your Stamina: It is very important to increase your stamina before you run a marathon. For this, take up any cardio workout like jogging, skip-rope, stepping, cycling or swimming. Depending on your current level, it may be a good idea to combine any two of these workouts. Devote at least 45 minutes to cardio training everyday.

Tips to Improve Your Speed for the Marathon
  • Warm up first with 10 minutes of easy jogging
  • Stretch thoroughly
  • Do 6 to 8 striders (Short bursts racing from point to point that is approx 80 meters).
  • Do a 10-minute cool-down jog
  • Stretch thoroughly

Coming up Tomorrow: In part two of this Training for a Marathon series, we’ll take a closer look at how tracking your marathon training progress, and buying the right marathon gear will help boost your performance in 2011’s Mumbai marathon.
