Ways to Prevent and Cure Migraines

That frequent headache you ignore could just be a migraine - headache that can affect anyone, anytime and anywhere. It is a painful condition that can interfere with your day-to-day activities. Though causes for migraine headaches are unknown, the symptoms can be made less severe and can even be prevented. Dr Sindhu Nair tells us more about the ways in which we can prevent and cure migraines.

Diagnosing Migraines:
Migraines are diagnosed by understanding the symptoms that accompany the headache and by tracing patients’ family history regarding the condition. With the help of a complete physical examination, the doctor can rule out if the headache is caused by muscle tension, sinusitis or if it is a serious brain disorder. Though there is no specific test that helps detect a migraine, one may have to go for a brain MRI or a CT scan.

If your headaches are accompanied by symptoms like weakness, memory loss, or loss of alertness, an EEG (Electroencephalography or a recording of electrical activity along the scalp caused by neurons in the brain) may be needed to rule out seizures.

Migraine Treatment: Migraines can be medically treated with drugs that contain triptan, ergots and beta blockers (pills with these chemical compounds). When the headache is accompanied by nausea or vomiting an anti nauseous drug is prescribed. The specialist who will help you deal with migraines is a neurologist.

However, prevention is a better option. One can reduce the severity of the symptoms by maintaining a diary for when your headaches occur, how severe they are, and what you ate before it. This will help you identify your migraine triggers and avoid them. Once you know what triggers your headaches, you can make changes in your lifestyle to avoid them. Often, migraines are not completely cured. It could take months or even years to cure the condition completely.

Here are Some Home Remedies for Migraines:
  1. Grind grapes to extract the juice. Consume the juice in the concentrated form, without adding water.
  2. Increase the intake of foods rich in niacin such as yeast, whole wheat, green leafy vegetables, tomatoes, nuts, sunflower seeds, liver and fish.
  3. Squash cabbage leaves and place them in a cloth. Place the cloth on your forehead for sometime. Once the cabbage leaves become dry, remove the cloth and add fresh leaves.
  4. Grind lemon peel to form a paste and apply it on the forehead. Let it dry and then rinse off with cool water.
  5. Combine 300 ml of carrot juice with 200 ml of spinach, beet or cucumber juice and drink.

  7. Include garlic in your diet.
  8. Try chamomile tea. It has a calming effect and reduces the occurrence of migraines.
  9. Drinking lukewarm water is effective as it helps clean bowels, thereby removing toxins from the body and helps preventing migraine.
