Migraine: Causes and Symptoms

Have you ever experienced shooting pains on one side of your head, but written them off as headaches? Don’t ignore them as those shooting pains could be a serious condition called migraine. A migraine is a type of headache that 11 in 100 people suffer from and can interfere with your daily chores because of its crippling and painful nature. Dr. Sindhu Nair tells us more about migraines and how we can tackle them.

What is a Migraine?
A Migraine is a common type of headache that may be accompanied with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or sensitivity to light. Many people feel a throbbing pain only on one side of the head. In extreme cases of migraine attacks, some people experience a warning symptom called an aura, before the headache. An aura is a warning, usually in the form of disturbances in vision.

Symptoms of a Migraine with an Aura:
A temporary blind spot, blurred vision, eye pain, seeing stars or zigzag lines.

Migraines - Causes and Triggers:
Those between 10-46 years of age are more likely to suffer from migraines. You could get migraines later in life and could be healthy otherwise. The condition is more common in women than men and in some cases could be hereditary.

Migraines during pregnancy:
Women may have fewer migraines when they are pregnant. They are least affected during the last two trimesters of pregnancy. The reason behind this is the hormone progesterone, which is at its peak during pregnancy. It promotes relaxation and thus reduces chances of pregnant women being affected by migraines. Even so, in a few cases some women who never suffered from migraines may start getting headaches once they become pregnant.

While a migraine definitely makes it to our list of ‘conditions to avoid,’ it is difficult to point out exactly what you can do to prevent it. A migraine is simply caused by abnormal activity in the brain and can be triggered by stress, certain foods or even environmental factors like pollution and noise. However, the real cause behind migraines remains unknown.
